How To Make Simple Syrup
Simple syrup can be used for a variety of culinary applications. This hard working recipe steps in the sweeten iced tea, cocktails & can be used to brush over cake layers before icing to keep them ultra moist. A little sugar & water is all that’s needed to get the task completed & the mixture can be flavored a variety of ways. Here’s how to prepare you’re own batch.
The Technique
A few pieces of equipment will be needed in order to complete the task. Read through the recipe before beginning. Here’s what you should know.
Simple Syrup
Stir together 2 cups sugar & 2 cups water in a 2-quart sauce pan. Bring the mixture to a boil over High heat, stirring occasionally. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat. Refrigerate until cold. Refrigerate up to 1 week. Makes about 3 cups.
Vanilla Bean Syrup
Add 1 split vanilla bean & the seeds to the warm sugar syrup once it has been removed from the heat. Let stand for 10 minutes. Remove the pod & pour the mixture through a fine wire sieve. Refrigerate until cold. Conversely, 2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract may be substituted for the vanilla bean. Stir the extract into the syrup once the sugar has dissolved & the mixture has been removed from the heat.
