How To Decorate Holiday Cookies
Decorating cookies during the holidays is such a special way to spend time with friends & family in the kitchen. A few dozen Buttermilk Gingerbread Cookies, Classic Sugar Cookies, Chocolate Sugar Cookies or Pumpkin Spice Sugar Cookies become something magical when dipped in Buttermilk-Vanilla Glaze. Top them with your favorite festive sprinkles or colored sugar granules. Royal Icing can be used to add candies & small details to cookies so be sure to look for piping bag pointers: How To Use A Pastry Bag for a flawless finish. Follow my simple techniques for making these classic blends that can be used for an array of baking & pastry treats.
Buttermilk-Vanilla Glaze
makes about 1 cup
The recipe makes enough to glaze several dozen cookies.
2 cups powdered sugar
4 Tbsp buttermilk
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Food coloring paste
Whisk together all of the ingredients in a small bowl until smooth.
Royal Icing
makes about 1/3 cup
Meringue powder gives Royal Icing the body to hold it’s shape when piped onto cookies. Look to it as an edible glue that has the strength to secure candies in place as well.
11 Tbsp powdered sugar
1 tsp meringue powder
1 Tbsp hot water
Food coloring paste
Whisk together the powdered sugar, the meringue powder & the water in a small bowl. Tint with food coloring paste, if desired. Add a smidgen of additional powdered sugar or a droplet of water, if necessary, to thicken or thin the icing for desired piping consistency. Place the icing in a piping bag before using.

How To Decorate Holiday Cookies
Buttermilk-Vanilla Icing is a simple recipe that can be used for a variety of confections. Drizzle down the sides of pound cake allowing it to drip slowly & dry at different heights around the cake for a beautiful finish or use a fork to create a lovely pattern over deep fried hand pies, danish or coffee cake. Be certain to cut the recipe in half for those ideas & when it comes to glazing cookies for festive celebrations, follow my pointers.
The Technique
Prepare the icing as directed.
Pour it into a small prep bowl that is just a bit wider than the cookies you wish to decorate.
Dip the tops of the cookies into the icing, one at a time.
Gently graze the cookie over the bowl lip as you remove it from the icing.
This will allow the excess to return back into the bowl.
Place the glazed cookies on parchment paper & decorate as desired.
Allow to dry completely.
If adding details to cookies, allow the Buttermilk-Vanilla Glaze to dry before piping with Royal Icing.
