Game Day Cocktails
The Technique
Classic Old Fashioned Shooters
Traditional cocktails are always an appropriate choice to serve guests when tailgating with friends but when divided into tasting portions, the opportunity to sample something different opens. Classic Old Fashioned Shooters are prepared with bourbon however if other spirits are desired, offer a Gin Rickey or Moscow Mule instead. They may be paired with a variety of provisions for an updated way to enjoy fan-favorite recipes ranging from Hot Buffalo Fried Chicken to Orange & Blue Pimiento Cheese with Chalk Talk Crackers. Look to The Essential Guide To Garnishing Game Day Cocktails for pointers on dressing any cocktail for a game day celebration but in the meantime, follow my straightforward method for capturing fresh orange rind to garnish each glass.
Classic Old Fashioned Shooters
makes 4 tasting servings
The Basic Fundamentals
The recipe can easily be prepared in large quantities & poured from a pitcher to serve a crowd.
2 tsp sugar or 4 cubes
8 drops bitters
2 tsp water
1 {2-inch} piece of orange rind
4 ounces chilled bourbon
1/2 cup ice cubes
Garnishes: Fresh cherries & orange rind
Combine the sugar, the bitters, the water, the orange rind & the ice in a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously 30 seconds. Strain the mixture into a measuring cup with a sharp spout. Pour the cocktail into 4 standard shot glasses. Garnish with cherry wedges & orange rind.
The Extra Point
Substitute cranberries in place of the cherries for a lovely variation.

How To Collect Fresh Orange Rind
When beautiful cocktails are desired, so much depends upon a striking garnish. Follow these tips to create lovely color & texture for each glass.
The Technique
Rinse the orange under cool water. Cut a small piece of the end away from one side of the fruit & place the flat portion onto the cutting board. Remove the outer peel of the orange using a sharp vegetable peeler by moving from the top to the bottom of the fruit. Pick the orange up, if necessary, to complete the task. When small portions are in order, remove small pieces of the peel with each swipe that can rest over the lip of the glasses.
