The Modern Southern Garden
The Profile
Lantana
New Gold Lantana is a plant variety known for it’s reliable color & foliage during the hottest times of the year. It thrives & really takes root in the garden when other varieties begin to fade. In most parts of our region, lantana is used as an annual planting but if properly protected it may survive a mild winter. I make certain to save a spot for it each year as the mounding, dense nature provides sweeps of color when used in mass & it attracts butterflies. Bright miniature trumpet-shaped clusters pop upwards approximately 1 foot high & spill over hardscape edging when the heat & humidity take hold lasting until the first frost. Lantana is easy to care for requiring minimal maintenance– just a little regular water. Learn how lantana clippings can spruce up entertaining spaces quickly.

How To Navigate Lantana
Beautiful flower arrangements should change with the seasons so begin by choosing items currently in bloom. Savvy southerners know to have distinctive, indigenous garden varieties planted around their outdoor space that can be used for a number of occasions. These arrangements are designed to be effortless & fast to prepare since entertaining involves many fine details as the event draws closer. Start by choosing a selection of simple beverage glasses & vases with clean lines to really allow bouquets to shine. Although lantana is not used quite as often in flower arrangements, when tucked with other blooming favorites, the petite clusters offer a sweet look.
The Technique
New Gold Lantana blooms & foliage can be used with additional seasonal flowers to create sweet summer flower arrangements. They are delicate when snipped so collect the clippings with care as once the entire cluster has opened the petite trumpets of sunshine will begin to drop. The clippings will release a distinctive odor that may seem off-putting to some while collecting them but it will fade over time. To create a custom bouquet, begin by choosing glasses with clean lines. Beverage glasses or clear vases work particularly well. Snip & gather stems early in the morning. Cut them low enough so that the blooms rest on the lip of the glass. Tuck in a few additional sweet summer favorites such as Narrow Leaf Zinnia, Lambs Ear & Victoria Blue Salvia amongst them. Use the flowers throughout entertaining spaces & around your home on side tables, vanities & kitchen islands.
