The Cheerleaders…
Are really the ones who know how to woo a girl. I’ve always loved watching them at football games. Their energy is marvelously contagious but it’s the synchronicity of it all that simply blows my mind – a confidence & focus I truly admire. You may be surprised to learn that not all of the NFL football teams have a cheerleading squad. The Detroit Loins are the latest organization to add them at the start of the 2016 football season with the hopes to raise entertainment value & enhance the game day experience. Currently 6 of the 32 franchises do not employ cheerleaders & include the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers, the Cleveland Browns, the New York Giants, the Pittsburg Steelers & the Buffalo Bills.
The Baltimore Colts were the first NFL franchise to introduce cheerleaders on the sidelines of professional football games in 1954 & the iconic Dallas Cowboys added them in 1960 which consisted of both male & female members. The goals of starting the exciting tradition still remain true today. Aside from game appearances, cheerleaders get involved in communities through philanthropic responsibilities plus participate in high profile engagements such as photo shoots, training camps & a variety of events all the while gaining increased fan spirit & overall team exposure for the franchise.
Classic Game Day Snack Mix pays homage to the time-honored cheerleaders who started it all when pom pom poofs & megaphones were a bit more front & center. A few handfuls in of this spicy blend & you’ll be hooked so go ahead & make a double batch. I’ve prepared it twice just this week alone & the recipe should really read: Serves two.
Classic Game Day Snack Mix
makes 14 cups
The Basic Fundamentals
The crowd noise will be deafening when you kick-off the party with this fan-favorite munchie. Reduced sodium seasoned salt peps this snack blend & rallies more herbs & spices instead of salt.
4 cups bugle-shaped snacks
3 cups rice cereal squares
3 cups pretzel sticks
1 cup lightly salted roasted almonds
2 tsp reduced sodium seasoned salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp ground red pepper
1/4 cup melted butter
3 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 mini bag single serve microwave popcorn
Freshly ground black pepper
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. Combine the bugles, the cereal, the pretzels & the almonds in a large bowl. Set aside. Stir together the seasoned salt, the garlic powder & the ground red pepper in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the cereal mixture & give it a toss. Stir together the melted butter & the Worcestershire sauce. Drizzle half of the butter mixture over the cereal & toss well to coat. Repeat. Spread the cereal mixture onto a lightly greased half sheet pan. Bake 1 hour, stirring every 20 minutes. Cool completely. Prepare the popcorn according to package instructions. Toss with the cereal mixture. Sprinkle with pepper. Store in an airtight container up to 5 days.
The Extra Point
A variety of snack nibbles & cereals can be substituted for an instant game changer. Simply make an equal exchange to maintain the overall flavor of the mix.
