The Modern Southern Garden
The Profile
Violas
The modern southern garden should include tried & true annuals that perform well in brisk weather. Violas, also known as Johnny-jump-ups are the smallest member of the vast Violet or violaceae family. Pansy is the general term used to identify this large collection of blooming plants & it should be noted that there is no relation to the indoor Violet varieties. They are a good flower to showcase in partially shaded areas as spring begins to emerge. Violas are generally offered as annuals or biennials with some perennial varieties & come in a variety of lovely color combinations. Learn how to make these petite blooms the focal point of your entertaining spaces.

How To Entertain With Violas
Beautiful flower arrangements should change with the seasons so begin by choosing items currently in bloom. Creating arrangements to use for spring entertaining need not be complex & with a few pointers they may be quick to make. Violas offer a lovely seasonal look when seasonal celebrations are in order.
The Technique
Violas may be found from garden centers in the fall & early spring months, the time of the year they are best planted. They make a lovely selection to showcase in containers & are some of the first blooms that may be used to perk up front doors & mailboxes. Violas grow well when planted in moist, rich well-drained soil & when they are spaced approximately 4 to 6-inches apart. Violas make lovely cut flowers for small needs. Linens may be wrapped with twine then finished with a flower or two for an effortless design to showcase in the center of place settings. Expect snipped blooms to last several hours without water between the twine atop the napkins.
