The Five Essential Bright & Sunny Blooms

If you don’t have these garden staples growing in your green space, select & plant several now from a local nursery to use in a number of lovely ways.

No. 1

Black-Eyed Susans

There are many lovely varieties of Black-Eyed Susan’s to showcase in your garden. Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ is a carefree, casual selection ideal to use in borders & for cut flower arrangements. When other blooms begin to fade in the hottest part of the summer, you can rely on Black-Eyed Susan’s to brighten spaces as Goldsturm, in particular, is a perennial signified by vibrant golden petals & richly colored centers with green foliage that is lush & hearty. The flowers offer a long bloom time & attract bees & butterflies into the garden. Learn how to care for & create beautiful arrangements when summer socials are in order.

No. 2

Salvias

There are many different types of salvias that should be used in outdoor spaces & they are wonderful for attracting birds, hummingbirds, bees & butterflies. Black & Blue Salvia is an herbaceous perennial with an anise scent requiring full sun in order to look its best. Once established, the average height can reach up to 6-feet tall while May Night Salvia averages about 18-inches in height & width & looks particularly magnificent when several are grouped together to form a border. Velocity Blue Salvia on the other hand offers a silvery hue to the soft purple blooms. It may be treated as an annual or a perennial depending on the zone. Learn how these beauties may be used when entertaining is in order.

No. 3

Zinnias

Narrow Leaf Zinnia is a reliable specimen that is available in a variety of colors ranging from bright white to bold yellows & oranges. Their mounding, bushy habit makes them excellent for use at the front of borders, particularly near mailboxes or to create lovely containers for decks when accompanied with lantana or verbena, chartreuse coleus or trailing sweet potato vine & salvias or yarrow. Their petite stature are wonderful to use in small arrangements perfect for casual entertaining.

No. 4

Roses

Roses are one of the most beloved flowering plants grown in the South & in many ways, Knockout Roses are much like an old friend as you can count on them time & time again. They are one of the most readily available of all rose varieties providing beautiful blooms from the spring through the fall. If cared for properly by fertilizing, watering & trimming them, these beautiful roses will not disappoint. Although these factors are a must in order for the deciduous shrubs to thrive, the time investment is rather minimal for what you receive in return. A quick feeding in early spring before growth will get them off to a good start. One of their most prized features are the continuous blooms throughout the growing season coupled with lush greenery compared to many other varieties. Knockout Roses are quite versatile as they can be kept trimmed low in the garden or left to grow as they please into beautiful hedges. Look for creamy whites to bright pinky red varieties to really liven up arrangements. Learn how to use these reliable flowers when entertaining.

No. 5

Lantana

New Gold Lantana is a plant variety known for it’s reliable color & foliage during the hottest times of the year. It thrives & really takes root in the garden when other varieties begin to fade. In most parts of our region, lantana is used as an annual planting but if properly protected it may survive a mild winter. I make certain to save a spot for it each year as the mounding, dense nature provides sweeps of color when used in mass & it attracts butterflies. Bright miniature trumpet-shaped clusters pop upwards approximately 1 foot high & spill over hardscape edging when the heat & humidity take hold lasting until the first frost. Lantana is easy to care for requiring minimal maintenance– just a little regular water. Learn how lantana clippings can spruce up entertaining spaces quickly.
