Sam Robinson will tell you his favorite piece of equipment in the gym is the bench press because it truly measures your personal strength– he can lift a whopping 365 lbs… ummm, can’t you tell! This gentle giant personifies physical and mental strength as he’s also a firefighter and quick decisions could mean the difference between life and death.

1. What’s it like being a firefighter?

Ever since I was little boy, I dreamed of being a firefighter and my mom was a huge influence on me making that decision. When I see childhood friends and they find out what I do, they all say they’re not surprised because I used to stick up for the weaker kids in my neighborhood growing up who were bullied. I’ve always wanted to be able to help others.

Suiting up and responding to a call is a constant adrenaline rush. You never know how things will unfold until you arrive on the scene and assess the situation. We get all kinds of calls from over turned trucks on the interstate to citizens with health issues so it’s extremely gratifying to know that you’ve helped someone in need at the end of the day.

I’m also the shift chef so I shop and make all of our meals.

{And yes, we talk recipes & food constantly… or really, I do all the talking like a regular Jabberjaw and ask him a ka-gillion and one questions of why he does or doesn’t like something… Sam has sampled just about everything on Buttermilk Lipstick and then some.}

2. What’s it like being a personal trainer?

I’ve been a trainer at the YMCA for about 4 years now. It’s an organization I’ve been associated with most of my life. It’s satisfying to know that through health and fitness you can change someone’s life.

What are some good food choices to eat before a workout?

Fueling your body is important in order to maintain your energy and maximize your results. I’m either opening the “Y” at 4 am or heading over there after a 24 hour fire station shift to meet with clients so I’m a huge fan of Clif Bars. They’re easy to pack and eat when I’m on the go and need an energy boost.

What’s good to eat after a workout?

Have an apple or a banana and eat it within 15 minutes of finishing your session. It’s important to replenish your body with nutrients so that all of your hard work pays off. I also recommend:

These are great because they’re gluten free, made with real stuff and they’re low glycemic which means you won’t crash after eating one. They also taste good which is always a plus.

3. What signifies a beautiful day?

My mom is a very strong and independent woman who has been such a positive influence in my life and to be able to have a conversation with her at the end of every day helps me to relax and unwind.

Sam chose some other songs but I couldn’t help but include this one instead. Each time Sam and I work together he plays me some music, usually something that will make me sport my gritty mean-face in order to get through all of the reps and, well… the pain.

One day we were running through the machines and a song came on that we both like so I asked Sam to serenade me as I was pushing through the exercises. And so he did. All of the heads in the gym began to double take in our direction. Mind you, we’re in the section where mainly the boys hang. An older gentleman began snickering and said he could hear Sam over his ear buds. Before you knew it, we were all laughing… that’s what helps me make it through each gym session. Whether it’s counting in candy bars, Christmas cookies or other baked goods, we always make sure to have a good laugh. It makes for a satisfying end to our hard work.
