makes about 1 dozen

2 3/4 to 3 cups soft wheat flour
2 Tbsp dark brown sugar
1 Tbsp baking powder
1 tsp kosher salt
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 cup cold butter, cut into small cubes
2/3 cups buttermilk
2/3 cups pumpkin puree
Melted butter

Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Whisk together the flour, the brown sugar, the baking powder, the salt & the pumpkin pie spice in a large bowl. Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender until it resembles the size of small peas. Stir together the pumpkin puree & the buttermilk; fold into the flour mixture just until a sticky dough comes together.

Turn the dough out onto a heavily floured surface & knead 2 to 3 times. Pat the dough to 1/2-inch thickness & portion with a 2 3/4-inch round cutter. Place on a lightly greased half sheet pan 1/2-inch apart. Reroll the dough & repeat. Bake on the middle oven rack 12 to 14 minutes or until lightly browned. Brush with melted butter.
