1.) Who are you pulling for come football season?

I’m a third generation Auburn grad. War Eagle. ‘Nuff said.

2.) What is your signature recipe to serve for game watching?

I love something completely indulgent and fattening for tailgating. If it involves Rotel and Velveeta, then I’m pretty happy. But, I’ll tell you one of my favorite tailgating experiences at Auburn: a friend of mine’s father is a catfish farmer, and he would do a catfish fry for every home game. We would eat fried catfish with coleslaw and hush puppies. A fish fry quickly became my favorite menu to serve at a football game.

 3.) Tell us about your most memorable game day?

Well this is a funny one. My favorite Auburn football memory comes from my sophomore year. National champion, undefeated Florida came to our house and we beat them. Auburn, who was ranked number billion, beat Florida!  I still remember everyone charging the field.  But, I had to leave early ‘cause I had a turkey in the oven and everyone was coming back to my house after the game. I literally had to run from the Jordan Harris stadium to my old house in Auburn, to get the turkey out of the oven.  I get there and realized I was locked out, so I broke in my roommates window… but the turkey didn’t burn and everyone loved it.

4.) Given your background, if you were asked to deck out a tailgate tent for a game day Saturday, what would you do to give it the style it deserves?

First I would think about the team colors, so while we are on Auburn, I love Auburn’s colors.  They aren’t orange and blue, but a deep blue and a deep orange, I love that color combination. I’m a sucker for anything plaid or checked. So I’d mix your favorite team colors in checked or plaid napkins.  Match them with a solid tablecloth and there you go. For the fall, I love dried hydrangeas for a centerpiece, nothing too stuffy, it is football after all, y’all.

5.) What is your signature cocktail on game day Saturdays?

A jack and coke. I’ve kind of just recently gotten into whiskey, thanks to some friends in Kentucky. It’s the smell of a jack and coke; that’s game day for me, in a Styrofoam cup.

James has appeared on the Today Show as well and regional television. His work has been featured in Southern Living and Traditional Home, among other magazines, and he is an editor-at-large for Southern Living. He lives in Kathleen, Georgia, just outside of Macon.

    Nice article, but I can tell you’re a Bama fan cause its Jordan Hare not Harris stadium! LOL
